During WWII, the USS Texas (BB-35) was a pivotal battleship providing naval gunfire support, most notably during the D-Day landings on June 6, 1944. Acting as the flagship for the Omaha Beach bombardment, she fired 255 14-inch shells at German positions near Pointe du Hoc. She famously moved within 2.7 km of the shore to support troops.
