At Tar Pits Park in Carpinteria, next to Carpinteria State Beach campground, you'll see tar oozing out the rocks. The Carpinteria Tar Pits is one of only five natural asphalt lake areas in the world! The tar here was used by the Canalino/Chumash Indians for tomols (canoes) and sealing water baskets. Something quite unique to our local area and just 40 minutes from the Conejo Valley.
